Darling Hill
Located just west of East Burke village, a hamlet in Vermont’s Northeast Kingdom, the Darling Hill house is a model of simplicity and efficiency. The Kingdom Trail mountain bike network surrounds the property, a welcome feature for the homeowners’ family members, all of whom are avid bikers. Just 1,700 sq. ft. above grade, this modest-size, three-bedroom house delivers mighty advantages.
Galvalume-coated steel siding exudes a clean, contemporary look while requiring little maintenance. A 12Kw solar array provides the home’s total energy needs. The extended, south-facing covered porch offers a three-season outdoor room and combined with an open ground-floor, gives the house a “larger than its actual boundaries” feeling. The family’s outdoorsy lifestyle translated into a desire for unfussy and economical interior materials. The solution came in the choice of rugged, locally-sourced pine flooring, hickory cabinets, and a combination of butcher block maple and black granite countertops.
Built to Efficiency Vermont Certified: High Performance specifications, Darling Hill house provides optimum comfort and air quality via balanced ventilation with heat recovery and air-source heat pumps for heating and cooling.
