Adam’s Mill
Perched atop a small rock outcropping southwest of Moscow Village in Stowe, Vermont, Adam’s Mill house is a newly-designed pure expression of New England vernacular typology—in this case, the Side-Hill English Barn. The stone foundation anchors the house to its side hill, while providing an outdoor patio above the lower level guest bedroom. From this elevated patio, views east to the Worcester Range are subtle, yet mesmerizing. On either end of the 3,500 sq. ft., four-bedroom structure, the simple gable roof form is extended to provide protection for the outdoor living spaces below. Wingwalls extend to support the roof edge and in doing so provide solar shading to the expansive east- and west-facing windows. Inside the home, sustainably-sound materials include M SORA windows, polished concrete floors, ash cabinets, and Barre, Vermont-quarried marble countertops.
The all-electric house, clad in durable, eastern white cedar with a shou sugi ban finish, is designed to Efficiency Vermont Certified: High Performance standards and achieves net-zero annual energy demand with the inclusion of an 18kW solar array. Balanced ventilation with heat recovery and air-source heat pumps for heating and cooling are also major sustainability components in the design.
