Curious about how the construction process works? Still have questions about executing a design from start to finish? We can help. Designing and building any home can be a daunting task. With all the architects, contractors, energy-efficiency incentives, and home design advice to consider, it’s easy to become overwhelmed. Our Smart Process streamlines your decisions. We curate the best available materials, technologies, and design ideas, then give you the final word on selections.
Arguably the most important step in our process is talking with you. We’re not interested in designing the house that we want to build — we’re interested in designing the right house for you. And the best way to do that is to ask questions. Lots of them.
We always begin with your overall vision for your house, but if you don’t know where to start, don’t worry. We’re happy to offer suggestions and advice derived from the scores of projects we’ve designed and built already. We’ll start by evaluating the pros and cons of your site, whether you own the property already or are still considering purchase. This is also where we talk about budget and how you might want to integrate principles of energy efficiency and renewable energy into your project. And, because we place a high emphasis on collaboration, we’ll talk you through how we coordinate designers, architects, contractors, and builders to get the job done.
Here’s where we distill all of our collective blue-sky thinking down into a clear, workable project plan that reflects your vision of the house that’s right for you, and the one that we feel confident we can execute in a graceful, functional manner – on time and within your stated project budget.
This is the fun part! When you start with a well-developed project plan, a typical house can often be designed in as little as two months—but most clients prefer to spread the design phase out over 6–12 months. Throughout the design phase, we place a high priority on construction cost predictability. As you make detailed decisions, we’ll provide you with valuable feedback as to the cost implications.
An ideal way for you to enter into any construction project is with a clear and complete set of detailed construction documents. These documents make contractor selections a cinch, and help you know what to expect in terms of construction costs. And, we’ll be with you every step of the way.
Unpacking boxes is only the beginning; most of our clients find it takes a few months to settle in and make a new home truly yours. And rest assured—in the unlikely event of something going wrong structurally in the first year, we’ll be there to help make it right.
